So you have bought a house in this crazy housing market, and despite the whopping great price tag it still needs some work? Or you’re looking to sell your home and a quick tidy-up of kitchens and bathrooms will get you a few extra numbers on that price tag? Here are our Top 5 tips for tiling kitchen splashbacks on a budget.
1. White is right. Most interior designers agree the white subway splashback is an absolute timeless classic. What is even better is the price tag – our City White range comes in several size formats, most in matt or gloss finishes and at around $30m2. With the average kitchen splashback being 2-3m2 this is an amazingly affordable solution to give any kitchen some tender love and attention. Click here to view our extensive white wall tile range.
2. Taking the white wall tiles one step further… utilising a funky laying pattern can give the plain white wall some serious impact. One idea few customers consider but are chuffed with when they do, is to lay a 75 x150mm or 100 x 200mm white wall tile vertically. Herringbone will test you or your tilers skill level but is also a great way to turn el-plain-o into el-wow-o. 3. Dark grouts give tile definition. Particularly if you are sticking with our white wall tile theme, the dark grouts can make each tile pop. We only recommend dark grouts on gloss finish white wall tiles unless super careful installation is adhered to. Some brands of dark grout can stain the white matt surface.
4. DIY. Go on… you can do it. With a quick tutorial from an instore tile consultant at the Tile Depot you will be ready to rock ’n' roll. Splash backs are generally small areas, wall tiles are easy to cut and with a nice wide 3mm grout joint the margin for error is higher than you would think. If you truly have a shocker pulling them down and starting again is really no big deal, just a few wasted tiles that we can call a practice run. Customers, friends and family that have the courage to give it a go, not only save a few bob but they are incredibly proud of their efforts and tell every other friend, family or houseguest about their newly acquired skill set.
5. Touch. That probably makes no sense whatsoever but for something really special yet still affordable check out the ‘Touch’ range. 7 colours perfect for any splashback with a natural ‘hand made edge’. The natural edge is oh-so hot right now, gives the wall some texture and life and is highly DIY-able. The wavey edge between the tiles means no one can tell when your grout lines aren’t perfect… they aren’t meant to be! Click here to view.
